“I should go in before Ed has a heart attack,” she said. “You take the pizza. Ed will be mad if he found out we went to Vinnie’s without him.” The smell of it had fairly permeated the car. It would be a while before Roger got it out.

A few cars were parked along the street. Cottonwood, ash, and oak trees lined the street and, in some areas, kept the streetlights from penetrating very well. Nobody moved along the street, although a dog barked somewhere nearby.

“I’ll walk you to the porch.”
